Scientists bounce sound waves (sonar, to be specific), and they use the details about how the sound wave eventually bounces back to them. Scientists can use this to determine distances and sizes of objects. Think, how do bats get around in the dark? It's similar to this. Dolphins use these sonar waves to communicate, too.
