There's a bunch of reasons for it i'll look through some history stuff but one was a war with mexico two was we sign some treaties with great britain three we bought some it in simple terms hope this helps :)

your welcome also the lousiana purchase did double our size but im not sure how far you mean west but it did put us farther west.
