idk what the passage is saying.. but im going to take my best guess... i think that it is saying that he summoned something, like some kind of spirit or being to give him some kind of potion to forget the memories of his lost love.  or something like that.. i have not read this story, but for that excerpt, and that is kind of what i got out of it... he was scared of whatever he summoned and he was under the influence of some kind of drug or drink that he took to try to forget something about the characher lenore
