I want a legit answer: Why do I need to know algebra?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It all depends on what you want to be and do in life. I hate math but I have to admit that depending on your career it is extremely important.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

bc it helps u in real world situations such as bills and tax and stuff like that!! =)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i luv MATH!! bc math is easy!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Actually, I think we use algebra far more than we think we do. The abstract thought process of juggling variables and constants is a part of our daily life. For example, you're at the grocery store and you've got a 5 dollar bill. You have three apples worth a dollar a piece in your shopping basket, and you want to buy as many bananas as you can with the remaining money. You know bananas are 50 cents a pound. So how many pounds can you buy? That's algebra, and we do it all the time. We use similar thought processes to manage time, money, and even people. Few people enjoy doing algebra in school. I didn't care for it either. But training in that kind of thinking is useful, and in retrospect I'm glad I had to learn it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah but if I want to go into a field where algebra will REALLY help me, I can't go through it in college, right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well depending ur career

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Because you will always come across math at some point in your life especially if your gunna be a doctor

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah I understand that we need BASIC algebra, but what all the rest!?!?!?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I get the whole doctor thing, but if you wanna be a doctor, take a math course in college.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

hmmm, it sounds like you have an unknown, and are seeking to find a solution to it using what is known ...

OpenStudy (amistre64):

Math is not just about counting numbers and such, it builds critical thinking skills that helps you to apply stuff you know in order to find solutions to things that you do not know

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@itsannalea, I'm going to be blunt with you. My dad only uses BASIC algebra and he's in the PR field, my mom is a chef and she uses plenty of math, but my uncle is a Lawyer and my Aunt and Psychologist and they don't even need Basic Algebra, they just need a sense of basic math in general. It all depends on your career. Basic Algebra can help with taxes and stuff but the advanced stuff is not necessary. I agree that there should be algebra and mathematics in general for peoplg who know they will actually need it, but it's helpful once in a while.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

We need algebra because it is a key component of mathematics and it is applied to merge certain concepts in mathematics. Algebra teaches pupils logical reasoning and problem solving techniques when it comes to several situations in life.

OpenStudy (ikram002p):

u dnt need to know it :D there is enough num of ppl who knw abt it try to learn somthing else lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol true that @Sofitina she has a point

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah this is why we have calculators, people!

OpenStudy (rational):

all the syllabus upto 12th grade is basic, everyone must know atleast that much. your question was like, asking 'i dont want to become an athlete, so whats the point in learning walking' ;)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You need to learn algebra because down the road, you will find that some point in your life you will have a need of algebra. Mathmatics is just like a step up into a good life. The rest of algebra is just like a branch from basic algebra. If you take an builder for example he/or she will need slope intercept form and so on to help build a good building. Some of the other things in algebra is probably something you wouldn't use in life, but is still a good thing to learn in just in case. Math is the most important part in everyones life. You will find it more than you know in this world. So learn good, it will be useful if used or if not.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If I need Algebra for my life, I'm screwed. Haha! I took it last year and I still don't know how I passed my EOC. :c

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No it's not at all like that @rational ! Because walking is BASIC. You're gonna use it everyday! Algebra-really really really basic algebra is used everyday. I don't wanna learn all this calculus sh*t

OpenStudy (anonymous):

SORRY for going around the filters but I just need to get this out.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Not to mention there are athletes who can't even walk..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

um @itsannalea i know u made a big point but lets face it we cant change the way this world works or thinks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so if we continue this convo its worthless nothing is going to change

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i am sorry if u get mad at me but im just saying so we dont make a big deal out of it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No I just want to know peoples thoughts and opinions.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok c: np but if a mod sees this they would say take it to chat

OpenStudy (anonymous):

really? I don't care I just want this here.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i feel so mad now :( for enforcing the OS rules against u

OpenStudy (ikram002p):

@rational it seems u have so much to talk abt lol

OpenStudy (rational):

lol okay i get what you saying @itsannalea, it depends on what we consider basic :) for me basic is sufficient math that lets me 'learn about entire universe' - for that you need to understand quantum-mechanics. To understand quantum mechanics you need to know math. So, bottom line is Math explains how universe works. If you're not bothered about universe, you can skip it. Some ppl inherently gets kick out of learning things for no particular reason - like, why do mountaineers climb mountains ? hmm...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@itsannalea to show that i am sorry and feel bad ill get more users in here 4u

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No no no @10_4 it's okay :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks :)
