Why did the building of canals slow in the 1830s and 1840s? Railroads started in America at this time. The rivers were too dangerous for building canals. Farmers found wagons to be a faster form of transportation.

People at that point were looking for other means of transportation, so it would have to that the Americans were starting to build the railroads.
