A worm and a snail enter the relay races. If the worm goes for 5 hours and then the snail goes for 4 hours, they cover a total of 448 inches. If the worm goes for 2 hours and the snail goes for 3 hours, they cover a total of 252 inches. How fast does each scoot along? SHOW YOUR WORK! & MEDAL REWARDED!!

OpenStudy (31356):

Anyone?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

your attempt??

OpenStudy (31356):

I did Ooops, I tried it, but it doesn't seem correct.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

show me your work, please

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

well the worm travels 5/9 or 448 the snail travels 4/9 of 448 then for the 2nd trip worm 2/5 of 252 snail 3/5 of 252 for the average speed Average speed = distance travelled/time taken

OpenStudy (31356):

Thanks Campbell!

OpenStudy (31356):

For your work and time.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Take steps, and reply if you got me. OK? Let say W is velocity of worm S is velocity of snail so 5W + 4S = 448 and2W+3S = 252 solve for W and S

OpenStudy (31356):

How do I solve for w and s?

OpenStudy (31356):

I understand the rest, except for that.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

time 2 to the first equation time -5 to the second equation add them together to get rid of W, just S there, and solve for S plug S back either of them to get W

OpenStudy (31356):

Thanks!
