Explanation help needed please on the following: A typical customer as a local supermarket spends approx. $75 at checkout, The store keeps 4 registers open, and each handles 12 cust per hr Estimate the amount of money the store receives in 1 hour is this not 75*12*4? thanks in advance

OpenStudy (ranga):

A few assumptions here. $75 is the AVERAGE each customer spends. All registers have a long line of people. Then in 1 hour: 12 * 4 customers And 12 * 4 * 75 dollars per hour is what the store will make.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my pre test quiz I answered was 3,600 according to correct answer it should have been $3200

OpenStudy (anonymous):

see why I am confused? :)

OpenStudy (ranga):

Not sure how with the given numbers one can arrive at 3200. Is the problem reproduced exactly here? Some info may be missing.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

will edit above as per question

OpenStudy (ranga):

not sure what ^^^^ means.

OpenStudy (ranga):

3200 / 4 = 800. Neither 12 nor 75 will divide evenly into 800. 10 customers per hour and $80 average spending will work. And there are other combinations. Bit with the given numbers the answer is 3600.

I am getting old and crinkly :( didn't need it 50 yrs ago don't want it now but its part of my course

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well all I can do is email professor and let her give the explanation before I take real test

OpenStudy (ranga):

Yes, that may be the way to go. It may be just a human error.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

indeed it may, thanks for help anyway ranga just wanted to know if I was making a mistake somewhere

OpenStudy (ranga):

If the problem has been reproduced faithfully here then the correct answer is indeed 3600. You are welcome.
