Solving with Quadratic formula help?

OpenStudy (fanduekisses):

OpenStudy (fanduekisses):

Look, I tried to solve this problem but I get

OpenStudy (fanduekisses):

square root of 10, not the correct answer which is in red

OpenStudy (fanduekisses):

I used the quadratic formula, I get a little confused when I get to

OpenStudy (fanduekisses):

-4 plus or minus 4 square root of 10 all over 8

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

4X^2 + 4x - 9 = 0 x =[-4 +/- sqrt(16 - 4*4*-9)] / 2*4

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

= -4 +/- sqrt 160 -------------- 8

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

sqrt160 = sqrt10 * sqrt16 = 4sqrt10

OpenStudy (fanduekisses):

ok

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

yw

OpenStudy (fanduekisses):

so -4 plus or minus 4 square root of 10 all over 8 ?

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

yea which reduces to [ -1 +/- sqrt10] / 2

OpenStudy (fanduekisses):

Ohh thanks so much

OpenStudy (fanduekisses):

But what happened to the 4 in front of square root of 10?
