Help me! 81 ^ 3/4 Divided by -> ------ = 81 ^ 1/2 a. 3 b. (81/3) ^-1/2 c. 27 d. 9

OpenStudy (potatoes.ramu):

Bring the half to the numerator

OpenStudy (potatoes.ramu):

you get 81^3/4-1/2

OpenStudy (potatoes.ramu):

So that sq. root of 81! Which is 9!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so you subtract the fractions?

OpenStudy (potatoes.ramu):

yeah!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

which is 81 1/2?

OpenStudy (phi):

you do subtract the exponents: ¾ - ½ which is the same as ¾ - 2/4 (change ½ to 2/4 by multiplying top and bottom by 2) btw, you do not get 1/2

OpenStudy (potatoes.ramu):

Oh yeah!! I wish the draw tool was working! Thank you! @phi

OpenStudy (phi):

you get 81^(¼) which means the "fourth root" of 81 to find the fourth root (if it has a "nice" one), factor the number and look for the same number repeated four times. Here 81 is 9*9 which is 3*3*3*3 we have four 3's, so 3 is the fourth root.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the answer is 3?

OpenStudy (phi):

yes, though I think that translates into the answer is (a)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks :)
