Ernest Hemingway's first job was as a newspaper writer in Kansas, at the age of 17. He wrote about everything that happened at the local police station, the train station, and the hospital. Hemingway worked for the newspaper for six months. The Red Cross then hired him to work during World War I. Hemingway traveled to Italy to work for an ambulance unit, which transported wounded soldiers to hospitals. During his military service, Hemingway was wounded. After his release from the hospital, he was promoted to first lieutenant in the army. Hemingway left the army in 1919. When he came back to America, Hemingway began writing for a magazine. He married a woman named Elizabeth, and they moved to Paris, France. In Paris, Hemingway began writing fiction. He also traveled all over Europe writing news stories about various wars. While he was in Spain covering a war, he wrote To Have and Have Not. He also wrote several novels when he lived in Cuba and Paris, France. Throughout his career, Ernest Hemingway published nine novels. More of his writing was published after his death.
