If an atom absorbs energy, what happens to its electrons? (Please explain why)

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

electrons get excited to higher energy level :) if energy lies in the visible region

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

bcoz the energy u have provided for electon is more than noraml so it will have higher energy :) which we say simply electron get excited :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks!

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

ur welcome :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I assume that would case the orbit to speed up?

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

orbit to speed up ? orbit is an imaginary concept :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh?

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

yup :)

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

based on energy of electron in that place orbits have made :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hm. Can you help me with a subquestion?

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

ok :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If that atom is emiing ligh, what are its electrons doing and how do you know?

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

when atom abosrbs energy mean outer valence electons will absor that energy and go to higher energy level (excited state) and then again come back to the original ground state (initial state) during that time they emit the light :) so u look it colored ;)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the light they emit is colored? or depending on the energy level, does ha color vary? or does that have anyhing to do with one another?

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

the light they emit is colored if the energy levels differnce are in the order of visible range of energy. as the atom get changed their energy levels also differ :) based on that different elements emit different colors :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thats great!! thanks!

A little earlier, you said ground state... ground state is the lowes sae for a substance, correct? but the sate is different for every substance?
