The width of a rectangle is 10 mm shorter than its length. Its perimeter is 244 mm. Let l equal the length of the rectangle. Write an equation for the perimeter in terms of l. Solve the equation, clearly indicating the length of the rectangle. Solve for the width of the rectangle. Clearly indicate the width of the rectangle Formula for Perimeter is: P = 2l + 2w where P = perimeter, l = length and w = width
There a few steps to this problem. One of them is to interpret the first sentence: The width of a rectangle is 10 mm shorter than its length. when you read this, change (or simplify) The width of a rectangle --> width -- and then simply --> W is --> = so far you have W= now 10 mm shorter than its length 10 mm shorter (or 10 mm less than) translate to --> -10 than its length --> length --> L 10 mm shorter than its length becomes --> -10+L or if you like L - 10 finally: W= L - 10
Now tackle Its perimeter is 244 mm that simplifies to P = 244 now you need a formula for the perimeter of a rectangle. Do you know it ?
That whole thing, has me lost...
@phi
Can you be more specific? Do you know the formula for the perimeter of a rectangle ?
the formula for the perimeter of a rectangle is P=2l+2w so if 10 is the width than P=2l+(2)(10) and if the Perimeter is 244 than 244=2l+(2)(10) or 244=2l+20 so now u find the length by getting l by it self so 244-20=2l so 224=2l now you need the l by it self so divide 2 by both sides to get 112=l so the length is 112 and the width is 20 Do you understand now?
Hope that helps @Thatgirl9513
