In the figure, the segment is parallel to one side of the triangle. The ratio of x to y is a. 1/3 b. 1 c. 3

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Can you find y?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no i don't know how @Mertsj

OpenStudy (mertsj):

In the big triangle you have these three sides: 16, 12, and x+9 In the little triangle you have these three sides: 4, y, and x Do you understand that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes i do. i tried setting up porportions but i cant get anything:/

OpenStudy (mertsj):

So the corresponding sides have the same ratio which means that 16/4=12/y

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Solve that for y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y=3

OpenStudy (mertsj):

And 16/4=(x+9)/x Solve that for x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x=3

OpenStudy (mertsj):

So x=3 and y = 3, what is x/y?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3/3 = 1?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

yep

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thankyou!

OpenStudy (mertsj):
