a. Set the bases equal to one another: "x = 2y". Then substitute "2y" into x in the expression "x+4". You'll get "2y + 4". Then set the two hypotenuses equal to one another and solve for y: "3y + 1= 2y +4". You get "y = 3". Then take that value for y and plug it into the y in the equation: "x = 2y" in order to find x's value (6).
