We put u = sqrt(2-x) ie. x = 2 - u^2 2(2 - u^2) = 1 - u => 4 - 2u^2 = 1 - u => 2u^2 - u - 3 = 0 Classic quadratic equation that you solve for u. Then you find x using x = 2 - u^2
