the value of -5x +6 is____ when x is 4

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

on questions like these, the problem tells you that x=4 what you should do is plug in the 4 where x is in the equation, since x is equivalent to 4 Ex: -5(4)=6 Does that make sense? @msbass ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it becomes -5 x 4 +6?

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

thats right :) and then you would solve using order of operations

OpenStudy (anonymous):

26?

OpenStudy (the_fizicx99):

No, its negative, one positive and one negative = negative so its -20 + 6

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

well..think about it this way… what is -5 * 4?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-14

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

as @tHe_FiZiCx99 has just explained… -5*4=20… so -14 is correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so if the x is -4 it becomes a positive?

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

yeah :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

woohoo,thank you so much

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

this is a concept that will become very useful to you as you work with more mental math

OpenStudy (the_fizicx99):

They either both have to be positive or both negative to be positive, One positive and a negative = negative positive and positive = positive negative and a negative = positive

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

and @tHe_FiZiCx99 , your process and intent was spot on and I applaud you…. just be sure to fully explain and lead the asker to the answer (i wanted them to figure it out on their own :) thanks for working with me to explain this!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you,i just made a note of that,i couldnt keep it in my head

OpenStudy (the_fizicx99):

Yesh your welcome boo :*
