connotation-"an idea or quality that a word makes you think about in addition to its meaning"
denotation- "the literal meaning of a word or phrase"

An example is the phrase "this house is a home" connotation makes us think of warm, and well a nurturing environment. 
"This house is a house" literal definition which concludes that it is indeed a literal house.
