Zack's Mom gave Tom $500 to spend on buying jeans, DVD, Jackets and shirts so, Jeans cost $80 each, Dvd cost $3, Jacket cost $150 and shirt cost $15, so how many jeans, DVD, Jackets and shirts do he need to buy to make $500

@e.mccormick

OpenStudy (anonymous):

please help

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

I assume you need to buy at least one of each item, and that it is to come out as exactly $500?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ya

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so how many i have to buy each

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

okay, how much for one jacket and one pair of jeans? how much do you have left to spend after that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1 jacket is $150 1 jeans is $80

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

okay, and that totals how much? how much is left to spend?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

$500

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

no, you start with $500. you buy 1 jacket for $150, and one pair of jeans for $80. How much money do you have left?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

$270

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

okay, how many shirts and dvds could you buy for $270?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@whpalmer4

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

I'm right here, waiting for your answer :-)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@e.mccormick what do u think

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

how many shirts could you buy for $270 if they cost $15 each?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

18 shirts

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

okay. shirts cost $15, dvds cost $3. we need to get some dvds as well, so we need to trade at least one shirt's worth of money into buying dvds. your call on how to divide it up, you get 5 dvds for each shirt you don't buy.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so what

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how many jackets we need to buy

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

we already said we were going to buy 1 jacket and 1 pair of jeans, which left us with $270 to spend on shirts and dvds.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thnx

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

as it turns out, there are 25 different ways you could spend the $500 exactly and get at least 1 of each item

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

start with 1 each of jackets and jeans, then 1 shirt and 85 dvds now simultaneously add one shirt and remove 5 dvds until you get to 1 jacket, 1 jeans, 17 shirts, 5 dvds next, do 1 jacket, 4 jeans, 1 shirt, 5 dvds then do 2 jackets, 1 jeans, 1 shirt, 35 dvds and repeat the process of adding a shirt and removing 5 dvds until you get to 2, 1, 7, 5
