each cut creates one more piece than the last cut did

cut 5 will make 11 + (11-7) + 1
cut n will make (n_previouscutspieces) + n_previouscutspieces - n_cutBeforethepreviouscutspieces + 1

so you start with 1, add 1 to get 2, ad 2 to get 4, add 3 to get 7 add 4 to get 11 add 5 to get 16, were adding one more to what we add each time. if that makes sense
