What were two reasons the Soviets were able to defeat the German army as they advanced on Moscow?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the knew the terrain better and they used the element of surprise the germans thought the russians didnt have a big enough army to try to take moscow back

Weather and Logistics. The Russians and their weapons were more acclimated to the extreme weather conditions, plus they had the benefit of fighting from defensive positions. As the Germans advanced, their supply lines got longer, and as the Russians retreated, their supply lines got shorter. The longer and more exposed the resupply route got, the more time and manpower it took for the Germans to operate and protect it. Eventually, they weren't able to keep up. They ran out of people, supplies and time.
