ILL GIVE MEDALS: How did the grand canyon form?

OpenStudy (nurali):

The canyon was created by the action of the Colorado River over about 6 million years of erosion. Nearly two billion years of the Earth's history have been exposed as the Colorado River and its tributaries cut their channels through layer after layer of rock while the Colorado Plateau was uplifted. The Colorado River basin (of which the Grand Canyon is a part) has developed in the past 40 million years and the Grand Canyon itself is probably less than 6 million years old, with most of the side canyons and downcuts occurring in the last two million years.
