Pedaling hard up the mammoth hill and puffing like a steam engine, Helen had barely begun her 5-mile trek home when the bike began to wobble beneath her. Her heart pounding wildly, she jumped off the bike, quick as a rabbit, and examined the tires. Somehow, the rim of the front wheel had gotten bent and was rubbing dangerously against the tire. I don’t have time for this, she thought with growing frustration. She pulled the bike onto the sidewalk and rooted around in her bike bags.
Where is my repair kit? she wondered. Then slowly, the puzzle pieces that were the afternoon’s events fell into place. Someone had bashed the wheel rim and stolen her bike tools—someone who didn’t want her to get to the 6:30 spelling bee finals on time. Like a police detective, she pored over the clues one by one until she was sure she knew the culprit. She knew someone as devious as a criminal mastermind, but he was not smart enough to cover his tracks.
