As soon as the slate-gray surf was in sight, the boy trotted ahead, scanning the beach for any foreign objects that might have washed up overnight. Sure enough, there beside an ancient driftwood log, something jutted out from the damp sand, glistening in the morning sun. Dennis let out a whoop and tore off like he was chasing a runaway kite. When he reached the object, he knelt down beside it and lifted it gingerly, cradling it like precious cargo in the lap of his sweatshirt. It was a sea-green, glass float with hardly a scratch on it—a beach-comber’s treasure that more than made up for all those mornings he’d come home empty-handed. 5.
