Randall's Sock drawer contains 5 black socks, 2 gray socks, 3 white socks, and 1 brown sock. If Randall selects 2 socks from the drawer in the dark, how many combinations of sock colors are possible?

This is the way I was told to do it:

Where each blank is how many socks are in the drawer when he pulls.
So you add up all the socks given. That's the first blank. The second blank would be that number -1 because he's holding one of those in his hand.

There is no equation. I just told you all you'd have to do to get the answer. It's just addition and multiplication.
