The point P(12, 16) is on the terminal side of θ. Evaluate tan θ.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Since both x and y (12 and 16) are positive, we're in Quadrant I. The tangent of this angle is opp ----- adj or ... ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i really don't know what to do

OpenStudy (mathmale):

What I typed above is the definition of the tangent function. opposite side tan theta = ------------ adjacent side so all you have to do is to write 16 tan theta = ----- 12 The best way to do this involves (1) reducing 16/12 to 4/3 and (2) finding the inverse tangent of 4/3. Decide whether you want to find this angle in radians or degrees. J-Z: Please ask questions if you need clarification of this process.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so once i reduce it i just find the inverse tangent and thats it?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Yes, after setting your calculator to either degree mode or radian mode, as you prefer. In this case there is only one answer, since we know we're restricted to Quadrant I.

ok thank you very much

OpenStudy (mathmale):

My great pleasure!
