Because B is the midpoint of AC and D is the midpoint of CE, we know that BD is a midsegment. This means that BD is parallel to AE and

AE = 2*BD

60 = 2*(3x) ... plug in AE = 60 and BD = 3x

60 = 6x

6x = 60

x = 60/6

x = 10

So,

AC = 5x + 10

AC = 5*10+10

AC = 50 + 10

AC = 60

Then you take half of this to get AB (since B is a midpoint of AC)

AB = (1/2)*( AC )

AB = (1/2)*(60)

AB = 60/2

AB = 30
