Why might it be advantageous to use two lenses separated by a distance rather than a single lens? Explain please!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well think about compound microscope or telescope. and try to see how the two lenses are used. you can never do the same with just one lens ;-)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is it to achieve a higher magnification?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not really.. u see a compound microscope uses two lenses, one the objective to create a large real image, and the eyepiece to create a virtual image.. so u can't do that sort of thing with just one lens now can u?

OpenStudy (lastdaywork):

By using a pair of lenses; you can increase the angle an object subtends at your eyes and simultaneously get the image at infinity (to make it easy on eyes XD )

OpenStudy (anonymous):

also possibly to correct for "chromatic abberation" with a single lense the different wavelengths of light will be brought to a focus at different distances
