Well I personally think it depends on what your doing. If your writing a story or for fun or whatever I normally start writing something randomly and then get the idea. However, if your doing a class project or something of that sort I like to think of the topic first. Then I get some ideas together and brainstorm. Once I've got a bunch of ideas I then put things in order.
