How would you describe the rate of change if you had a vertical line?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ah, undefined?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Either that or infinite.

Take two points on a vertical line and use them in the avg. rate of change formula. You'll find that you'll end up with a 0 in the denominator, and therefore your rate of change is undefined. Most teachers will accept that as an answer and a proof.

undefined

rate of change is also know as slope, and slope is delta y/delta x. since x is 0, its undefined.
