Hakan heard the terrible avalanche before he saw it. Tender young trees were snapping and popping like sap in a campfire, while the sun-drenched alpine ridge, not half a mile above him, gave no suggestion of the tumult raging just below it. Calm down! Seconds before the unforgiving torrent would have carried him away, the sweat-soaked skier reached the thicket and collapsed beneath its welcoming arms.
