using the circle, find the value of x to the nearest tenth.

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

picture?

OpenStudy (highschoolmom2010):

attaching one now

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

Okay, so you the Pythagorean theorem. a^2 + b^2 = c^2, where c = hypotenuse Hypotenuse = 7 + x side a = x side b = 10 Plug in... (x)^2 + (10)^2 = (7 + x)^2 Solve for x. :)

OpenStudy (highschoolmom2010):

x^2+100=49+x^2

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

um, not quite. (7 + x)^2 = (7+x)(7 + x)

OpenStudy (highschoolmom2010):

oh ok

OpenStudy (highschoolmom2010):

a^2+100=49+14x+x^2

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

good, now keep going, tho a^2 would be x^2

OpenStudy (highschoolmom2010):

x^2+51=14x+x^2

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

good, keep going

OpenStudy (highschoolmom2010):

x^2/x^2+51=14x+x^2/x^2 51/14=14x/14 x=3.6

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

great work!

OpenStudy (highschoolmom2010):

thanks for the help

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

you're welcome
