How do you isolate the y in an equation

Here is an example for isolating y in the equation =) 3x+y=12 subtract 3x from both sides to get this: -3x+y=12-3x Answer: y=3x-12

when you have an equation, the lefthand side is equal to the righthand side, you can add or takeaway any term to both sides and you can multiply both sides by any term, you can also divide both sides by any term (as long as you aren't dividing by zero)
