(x–3)^2–81=0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

are you trying to solve for x?

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

if you add 81 to each side of the equation, you get (x-3)^2 = 81 do you know any numbers that when squared equal 81?

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

(don't forget that there's a negative number which when squared equals 81, too)

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

10*10 = 100. 10 is too big 7*7 = 49. 7 is too small must be somewhere between 7 and 10, don't you think?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

just take the square root of both sides so then you get: x-3= +/- 9 so then you add 3+9 and 3+ (-9) sooooo answers are x= 12 and -6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(x–3)^2–81=0 (x–3)^2=81 x–3=+-sqrt(81) x=+-sqrt(81)+3 x = 3-9 = -6 x = 9+3 = 12
