1. them. 2. their The first one isn't right either way, though. It wouldn't be they nor the for the simple fact that it is awkwardly arranged, but out of the two choices, them is the best. Now, for the second question, it would be their because you're talking about two people with a mutual friend in between, it wouldn't be him but it could be his if there was only one person involved. :)

A is B requires that B is the nominative case, so "they" is correct, though rare. "Who is it?" "It is I." correct but rare.
