when constructing a perpendicular bisector, why must the compass opening be grater than 1/2 the length of the segment?

its cuz if u take it exactly frm the centrepoint u wont get a perpendicular ,if u take it bit greater than half of it,then u wud get an exact perpendicular

If the compass opening is less than half the segment, the arcs above and below the segment will not intersect.
