can someone please please please help me solve this using long division? _____________________ x^2+x+ ) 4x^2-5x^3+2x^2-x+5

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

is that supposed to be 4x^4, perhaps? what is the dividend (the thing under the division sign) what is the divisor (the other thing)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, I'm sorry! I made some typos! The equation is actually: ________________________ x^2+x+1 ) 4x^4-5x^3+2x^2-x+5

OpenStudy (blackops2luvr):

x = -1/4

OpenStudy (blackops2luvr):

Alright, I wrote it all out, if I posted my work, could someone check it for me and make sure it's the correct answer?

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

sure!

4x^2 -9x+7 ____________________ x^2+x+1 ) 4x^4-5x^3+2x^2-x+5 4x^4+4x^3+4x^2 ___________________ -9x^3-2x^2-x+5 -9x^3-9x^2-9x __________________ 7x^2+8x+5 7x^2+7x+7 ______________ x-2 and for my final answer I got: x-2/x^2+x+1

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

That looks correct to me...

Thank you!! @whpalmer4
