use the pythagorean theorem : AB^2 + AC^2 = BC^2 so, AB^2 + 3^2 = 5^2 AB^2 = 5^2 - 3^2 AB^2 = 25 - 9 AB^2 = 16 AB = squareroot(16) = 4
