show how to make one addend to next tens number

OpenStudy (31356):

Do you mean rounding? I don't quite understand your question, if I am incorrect, please try to further explain yourself. I think you mean to round to the nearest tens and then complete the new addition sentence? When you round, if the number is 5 or greater, then you round UP. if it is less than 5, then you round DOWN. so, 15 is rounded UP to 20 and 37 is rounded UP to 40. now, 20+40=60

That is just an example.

@Petula , Medal?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I believe it is rounding up. I wanted to make sure that I am understanding it correctly so i can explain and teach my 2nd grader. Its asking for one addend so im assuming she is not to round both numbers. The problem is 15+37=?

My thoughts were that w e can pick any number so it would be: 15+37=52 her new addition sentence would be 15+40=55...however another option would be to subtract 3 from 15 since 37 was rounded up by 3...12+40=52. In this example i get the same answer as the original problem???

Thanks for the medal!
