Can anybody help me solve this extraneous solution?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@zepdrix

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

(7x+6)^(1/2) - (9+4x)^(1/2) = 0 sqrt(7x+6) - sqrt(9+4x) = 0 sqrt(7x+6) = sqrt(9+4x) 7x+6 = 9+4x ... ... ... x = ???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

combine the like terms?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you have to get the like terms to the same side first

OpenStudy (anonymous):

7x+4x=6+9=0

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

7x+6 = 9+4x 7x-4x = 9-6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3x=3, x=1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is that correct

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

x = 1 is correct

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

(x+5)^(1/2) - (5-2x)^(1/4) = 0 (x+5)^(1/2) = (5-2x)^(1/4) x+5 = (5-2x)^(1/2) ... square both sides (x+5)^2 = 5-2x ... square both sides again x^2 + 10x + 25 = 5 - 2x I'll let you take over

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x^2+12x+20 (x+10)(X+2)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

good, keep going and make sure to check each possible solution
