Can someone check this extraneous solution? Please

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jim_thompson5910 please check it?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

x = 2 is incorrect

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you should have 3x+1 = 4 + 4*sqrt(x+1) + x+1 after you add sqrt(x+1) to both sides and square both sides Then isolate sqrt(x+1) and square both sides again

OpenStudy (anonymous):

16x^2+16x-4

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

3x+1 = 4 + 4*sqrt(x+1) + x+1 3x+1 - 4 - x - 1 = 4*sqrt(x+1) 2x - 4 = 4*sqrt(x+1) (2x-4)^2 = (4sqrt(x+1))^2 4x^2 - 16x + 16 = 16(x+1) I'll let you finish
