Asymptotes & discontinuities

@ganeshie8

OpenStudy (mathmale):

I'd be more comfortable reacting to and commenting on your own work. There are three cases here, I, II, and III. Write out as much as you can about what you know about each of these cases. Start with Case I. How do you identify vertical asymptotes?

OpenStudy (lena772):

I think it's II only, am I right?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Lena, it goes against the grain for me to say someone else's work is "RIGHT" or "wrong." I need to know how you decided that II is the only correct response before I can give you meaningful feedback. I asked you to start with Case I and explain how you identify vertical asymptotes.

OpenStudy (lena772):

Sure..

OpenStudy (lena772):

You must find the domain and whichever answer is not in the domain is the asymptote?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

that's a start, and I appreciate your trying. What I'd do myself is very closely related to what you're suggesting here. I'd set the denominator to zero and solve for x; the result is x=3, and that describes the vertical asymptote.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

As for the next one: I need for you to look up "removable discontinuity" and then to say whether or not this function has a "removable discontinuity."

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Please see: http://www.mathwords.com/r/removable_discontinuity.htm

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Lena? Did your computer shut down, or did you intentionally go offline? I was waiting for a reply from you. It's important that you let me and others know in advance when you're leaving (unless you unintentionally lost your Internet connection). Until we get this cleared up, I will now reply to other students before I reply to you.

OpenStudy (lena772):

Hey. Openstudy has been having problems for me.

OpenStudy (lena772):

I submitted the exam already however. Thanks for everything!
