We need trustworthy moderators patrolling the chat. People are posting spam, inappropriate and rude words, bullying others, giving direct answers, posting links that are irrelevant and sometimes contain rude things, etc. I find that people are getting out of hand in the chat, and something needs to be done. That is what I propose. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Its like the code of conduct doesn't apply to many people, and things are escalating too far. They even made fun of my religion and no one does anything. Reports are helpful, and it is annoying, really. Orwell_84 won't stop talking about sexual things and spamming, for the past 2 hours and nothing is done. I do not like nor understand this. :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The worst chat is math. That needs several or at least 2 -3 TRUSTWORTHY mods there.

OpenStudy (esshotwired):

Yes I do completely agree with you, but they do usually watch for things like that. If there is anything going wrong and is against the rules, you can report the person and give your reasoning. After so many reports, the person can be kicked, suspended, or banned. But I do not think posting links about things off this site would be wrong. If it is repeated multiple times for no reason, it can be considered spam. If you see anyone asking and answering questions in the chat, you should immediately notify a moderator and report. Chats are made for taking breaks and being off topic. I do hate the people who abuse this. Unfortunately, no one can stop a person from creating second accounts on here. It is just how it is and many people wish to stop it. Just do remember mods try to watch the chats the best they can.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I understand. :)

OpenStudy (esshotwired):

I just look at all those other people and think about how bored they must be. smh. I wish there was more we can do, but people can easily abuse what they have, especially on the internet!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, definitely! I see daily users come and post things......that are controversial. And retricefor cuss words put periods to avoid the filter like this: B.A.D. .W.O.R.D Or add symbols like this: b@d w00rd

OpenStudy (esshotwired):

Yes and honestly the best thing to do is report and ignore them. Just yelling and telling them to stop makes them want to continue even more.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah. Sometimes I have to go as far as personally message a mod, and I don't want to seem like some strict fuddy-duddy (XDDD) But, yeah.

OpenStudy (disco619):

When I first came to OS, this guy kept discriminating me. Like, full on RACIST! He kept doing this for weeks and no Mod did anything about it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I am SO sorry @Disco619 - See this is the shamefulness we get out of going to chats. They are meant for just that, chatting, but they are taking things too far.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I agree, @Saphira_Shapiro ....BUT, the point of the chat is so that people don't spam and post stuff like that in the subject sections.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But they do post things and feel that consequences don't apply to them.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And in turn, they do spam and do post their business etc.

OpenStudy (shrutipande9):

i m really sorry dat both of you had to face such a thing here on OS. the moderators have been working their best to keep such things under control. as a user what u can do is report such people immediately and give d reason. if u dont see a response just message any moderator who is online.

OpenStudy (compassionate):

Hi, Administrators are well aware of the issue. If you feel someone is violating the Code of Conduct, try messaging them and let them know you don't like their behavior. If they continue, report the user. If a moderator is not online or active, the user may receive a community suspension. After someone withholds a number of suspension on their record, they automatically get suspended for 24 hours. Now, folks, we can never have enough moderators! We're always looking to add new moderators to our circle :) There has been discussion about allowing Ambassadors to perform certain actions to moderate the chatbox. This has been spoken about before and has been noted on several different occasions. There has also been talk of new flame and spam filters - and a time someone has to wait before posting. For example, if someone post more than 3 posts within 3 seconds, they get a warning, if they continue, they get suspended. Thank you for your concern. We always looking to improve user-experience and appreciate your feedback. This is certainty on our list in the near future. :) - Compassionate

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, but I see several administrators like Luigi (sorry for calling you out) Being just as rude and inappropriate. Sometimes I report but there are no consequences I see applied towards this manner. I bet you right now, look in the Math or History chat and you will see someone saying something inappropriate right now.

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

I'm retiring so my turn to break the rules xD

OpenStudy (juakikun):

Ambassadors* not Administrators XD the only admin there is, is Preetha.

OpenStudy (juakikun):

shush Luigi u fake.

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

12 year old admin right here people\ Juak, shush

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Please, this is not the place to post that.

OpenStudy (juakikun):

Alright xD.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I am not an admin but would love to be.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The thing is...Yea people are nasty sometimes but i see that @Saphira_Shapiro you were participating in the math convo. Unfortunately the only way that your not going to have issues with that stuff is if you just stay outta the convo:-/ People are rude thats why you should just not say anything in convos. Sorry for everything that was said about you. I do agree with you though:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes @Kaypay98 I join and state that it is inappropriate and a mod is needed. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh alright:) I just mean let the nastys sit and talk to eachother. The nicer people can use open study for what its meant to be used for:):)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Kaypay98 Mhm, definitely! :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I wish I could give you a medal, but I already gave it away. :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thats fine:) THats not why im here:):)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I just came to give my opinion:) Im not always trolling for medals haha

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Goody :D

thomaster (thomaster):

The core of this problem is the fact that it's ridiculously easy to evade a suspension. Once that problem is fixed, there will be much less inappropriate activity on the site. Moderators always don't have time to patrol the chat since there are a lot of issues outside the chat too, besides that we try to help people with questions too :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah, I have an idea. You should post a subject dedicated to signing up to be a mod. People must send an application and tell why they want to be one. you can review their history and then decide within a week or so. Would that help increase the number of mods therefor being able to help keep the chat safe? Plus, I would be happy to supervise a chat if I were a mod, so it wouldn't be a problem.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Mythical is being rude inn the history chat right now and cursing at me, but all I can do is report and get a mod. If you go to the history chat, you will see it. This is what I am talking about. :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Just called me a word I wish not to repeat.

OpenStudy (juakikun):

What confuses me, is how come moderators can't have ip ban, it doesnt have to be permanent but on a set time or amount of days.

OpenStudy (juakikun):

It would be extremely useful so we don't get the same people coming back again till there time is up.

OpenStudy (disco619):

I can't even report so many Abusers. I myself will get a Warn/Suspension for it...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Juakikun It's not the IP, but the fact that we need restraints. I have an idea, if someone types in a word not verified by the site, they cannot post it nor use symbols to try and post it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But @Juakikun some people have to share a computer and if one gets banned, it is not good for the other person to get banned too. Which makes multiaccounting that much harder to prevent.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I understand how hard it is for moderators now.

OpenStudy (juakikun):

Well sadly, its something to deal with since there brother or friend screwed up. Being a Game admin and there forums, yeah I seen some complaints but they have to deal with the time cause there friend(s) or brother(s) messed up big time. Plus it's hard to believe them cause they could also lie.

OpenStudy (juakikun):

I have dealt with this for 8 years, so its something not big of a deal.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, but see why its hard. :P

thomaster (thomaster):

Well you'd have to do something really bad before you end up IP banned here. The simplest solution is to require email verification before any of the site function will become available. Trolls/spammers will hate that, because they'd have to create a new email address every time they sign up for a new account. Currently this isn't required so you could just fill in fasdff@vsodf.9834 for an email and the system would still take it. That's why it's so easy to bypass a suspension. Another thing could be blocking an IP from signing up for a new account for some time after their previous account got suspended. This way you won't hurt the people who might use the same IP address but already have an account.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah, that is awesome!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the problem with ip bans is 2 many people can be affected for what 1 person did

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes Kag, but guess what, it is our responsibility to state you rules if sharing a computer and using the same site.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

of course as you said they would have to do something really bad

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Then again, people will go out of their way to create the fake email and still verify it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks for the medal orange master

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes i know i know several people that share computers but there is also people like me that have multiple comuters

OpenStudy (anonymous):

An IP-Address can be detected through an internet connections.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i know there are public ips and private ips

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

What if the person is in a school that has MANY MANY computers? Nope, IP bans are not the solution bruh

OpenStudy (poopsiedoodle):

yeah, if you have different computers on the same net, you still have the same IP address on both of them. #whyamIreplyingtothisI'mgoingtogetsomanynotificationsit'snotevenfunny

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

It bans all the computers in the network if they all share the same IP.

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

Besides, this has been discussed so many times... haha

OpenStudy (poopsiedoodle):

yes it has.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but were discussing it again.... lol

OpenStudy (poopsiedoodle):

no need. Just got done with one of these about a week ago

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

I think OpenStudy needs to develop a simple algorithm for detecting whether someone is spamming too much too quickly (20 chats per minute), and one for detecting rude language and variants. The script could autowarn and autoban.

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

It would have to be very reliable though.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

they already have a system that changes cuss words

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

Not changes. Warns if they use them too often, and bans if they use them even after being warned.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@dumbsearch2 But it is not that easy, and people still find loop holes. Do you know helpful computer software?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes i know im just saying that they have a system just need to tweak it a lil and i agree with @Saphira_Shapiro doing stuff like this is not easy and is very time consuming

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh and there are loopholes to get around stuff but theses are also hard to make but once a loophole is made every1 will use it because there will be someone that will find that loophole just to be a pain

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@kag THANK YOU!! Exactly my point hon. :)

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

I've seen many applications doing this without so much trouble through the Metaphone algorithm system. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metaphone So it's hard to make a word that even nearly resembles the rude word if its implemented correctly. Here's an example: http://webroy.blogspot.com/2009/07/advanced-bad-word-filter-in-php.html Besides, yeah if you're making a studying site, you better invest some time!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well this is just it, we need monitoring. A filter is not gonna make a difference.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it is still frustrating having to patch things over and over again

OpenStudy (poopsiedoodle):

The moral of the story is: they're working on it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yep. :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, thanks for the lovely conversation everyone! I am officially closing the topic. :) Have a great day everyone!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

u 2!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i can do it :)

OpenStudy (poopsiedoodle):

how did you even find this what

thomaster (thomaster):

lel

OpenStudy (juakikun):

When it comes to new scavengers, they will always find it. RUN EVERYONE.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok
