OpenStudy (xmoses1):

I am writing a Bio on Mark Twain. I need someones help to create a Thesis Statement ლ(ಠ_ಠლ)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I can help. Please hold xD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I did a bio on his too. This is what I used as a Thesis statement: The author, humorist, and lecturer Mark Twain is regarded as one of America's greatest writers. His insight into human nature, his humor, and his use of everyday American language have made his novels and stories among the best loved in American literature.

OpenStudy (xmoses1):

Wow that is really imppressive!

OpenStudy (xmoses1):

how big was your bio?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks, just like....5 1/2 paragraphs

OpenStudy (xmoses1):

oh lol mine only has to be 300-500

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh xD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

College English instructor here: Keep in mind that your thesis needs to be an argument, so you might want to, for instance, question why Twain is so loved.

OpenStudy (xmoses1):

for his writing

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sure, but what specifically about his writing? Why is it still relevant today? Why continue reading the stuff? Is there a basic human truth to it or an American truth to it?

OpenStudy (xmoses1):

Oh i see what you mean! All of a sudden i am not excited about college -_-

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ha!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@BrianTimmerman i guess so. like you can add kind of what i did with the question. like intro would be a question and conclusion answer. i did that in a couple essays and bios

OpenStudy (xmoses1):

I see where you are going though and it does make sense. My bio has to have some uumph to it that digs deep!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Just try and dig a little deeper and ask "Why?" questions. It's also important to ask "so what?" and "who cares?" when you think you've arrived at proper thesis.

OpenStudy (xmoses1):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In most cases, the novels should help you promote a greater "fact" (about society, the human condition, etc.)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Anyway, sorry to bud in. I'm just testing out Open Study to see how all this works.

OpenStudy (xmoses1):

Like, for instance, i read that some people consider his writing to have... inner meanings. Idk how to say it exactly

OpenStudy (xmoses1):

sort of like a metaphor but in writing

OpenStudy (xmoses1):

and no it is fine you are really helpful you didnt bud in :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Exactly. You don't need to prove that Twain was good at what he did (your teacher already probably feels that way), you need to prove why it's something no one considered.

OpenStudy (xmoses1):

ok i will work on that :) thanks for the pointers!
