Word problem: There are 2 girls in my grandmother's family, my mother and my aunt. They each had 3 daughters. My two sisters, 3 cousins, and I each had 3 daughters. Each one of our 3 daughters have had 3 daughters. If the pattern of each girl having 3 daughters continues for 2 more generations (my mom and aunt being the 1st generation, I want to know about the 5th generation), how many daughters will be born then? Write the explicit equation for this pattern.

OpenStudy (superdavesuper):

Sounds like a geometric series....are u familiar with that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Haha no, I just moved to a new school in the middle of the year, so I have no idea what's going on.

OpenStudy (superdavesuper):

yikes....so the series a, aR, aR^2, aR^3 doesnt look familiar to u?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry, not really.

OpenStudy (superdavesuper):

that is a geometric series....so in this case, a=2 because at first gen. there are mom and aunt...so a=2....mom n aunt each has 3 daughters so at ur gen it becomes....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a=2 r=3 n=5 find t5 tn=ar^(n-1)
