On Ordinal scales, you can rank them but not compute differences, ratios or certain calculations on them. You can find modes and medians but not means: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Level_of_measurement

From the link above - The median, i.e. middle-ranked, item is allowed as the measure of central tendency; however, the mean (or average) as the measure of central tendency is not allowed. The mode is allowed.
