What does mitosis produce? a. four genetically different habloid cells b. four genetically identical habloid gametes c. two genetically identical habloid cells d. four genetically different diploid cells will give medal

OpenStudy (blues):

There are two types of cell division - mitosis and meiosis. In mitosis, a cell duplicates it's DNA - so it goes from being in its ordinary diploid state to having twice that amount of DNA. Then it divides once. Each of the two new cells get half the chromosomes in it - so it makes two diploid daughters. Meiosis starts the same way, a cell duplicates it's DNA and divides once into two daughter cells, each back to the ordinary diploid state. Then each of those two new daughter cells divides again - half the DNA in each parent cell goes to each new cell, which is now haploid. The question basically asks you what the difference is between the two. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

meiosis*** sorry i meant meiosis.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So it would be C?

OpenStudy (blues):

Don't think so. In meiosis, one cell divides into two cells. Then each of those two cells divides again - so it ends up with four cells. Which rules C out.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but its a haploid so would it rule out A. and D. too?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh wait just D.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

SO it would have to be A am i correct

OpenStudy (blues):

It is indeed haploid - so A is the only option left.

OpenStudy (blues):

Process of elimination works well on multiple choice questions... ;)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you so much :) i understand it now

OpenStudy (blues):

Thanks for your patience working through the prob.
