The Renaissance is often considered the end point of the Middle Ages as Europe's society and culture continued to go through dramatic changes starting from the collapse of the empire to the ideals and the rise of powerful nations by the time the Renaissance started.

The Middle Ages had also been called the Dark Ages by historians awhile back because the collapse of the Western Roman Empire (or Rome itself) was often seen as the start of a long descent into barbarism.
