when did the earlier years of the Middle Ages begin ? A. the search for new trade routes B. the collapse of the Roman Empire C. the Renaissance D. the Crusades
C i think
C is correct!
I'd go with (B) collapse of the Roman Empire. The Renaissance is often considered the end point of the Middle Ages as Europe's society and culture continued to go through dramatic changes starting from the collapse of the empire to the ideals and the rise of powerful nations by the time the Renaissance started. The Middle Ages had also been called the Dark Ages by historians awhile back because the collapse of the Western Roman Empire (or Rome itself) was often seen as the start of a long descent into barbarism. The Crusades were also launched during the Middle Ages and the search for new trade routes were also a part of that time as European traders attempted to find ways to reach the Orient without having to deal with the high tolls often asked for by either the Byzantines or the Arab empires that held the best routes to the East at the time.
