The African American life through 1865 and 1900 was one of struggle. After emancipation, many had trouble finding work due to prejudice and many went back to their old lives. Through the attempts of some Northern generals, some got plots of their old slave owner's land. However, due to the political atmosphere of Washington, they were given back to those who previously owned it. This was great economic, let alone political and social, hamper on the African American people.
