I think it'll be better if you master the memorization of most trigonometric identities. That will really help you!

It can help if know the rules really, really well.  Also, cheat and work towards the middle ground in notes, then write it out properly for an answer.

Also, watch the GCCC Youtube videos on it.  The teacher gives some tips of things to try.

Yeah I know how you feel, I can memorize all identities but it doesn't make them that much easier...

for trig identities convert everything to sin/cos/tan as the first step

Yes, which is where seeing more application and hearing more teachers talk about it as they do them can end up helping.  You begin to develop a system.

And for a ton of problems, what UnkleRhaukus pointed out is a great step.  Sometimes it means it takes longer, but until you are comfortable with them, that is generally not a bad way to go.
