what is -9/4 - 5?

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

-9/4 = -2.25 -2.25 - 5 = -7.25

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what is that in a fraction?

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

\[-7\frac{ 1 }{ 4 }\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 29/4 would be the improper fraction. I don't understand how you get that.

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

Whole numbers can't be turned into a fraction.

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

Oh hold on.

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

Hmm yep, 29/4. It can't be simplified.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know, I don't understand how you get 29

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the equation I am solving is y+5=3/4x-9/4

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

\[\frac{ 1 + 7 • 4 }{ 4 }\]

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

Ok I see now. So the fraction for 5 is 5/1, but we need the denominator to match with 9/4, so we multiply both the top and bottom by 4: 5 • 4 = 20 1 • 4 = 4 now we have 20/4 + 9/4. Combine the numerators and the solution is 29/4

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

There is no common factor so it cannot be simplified.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay, I understand now, thank you very much.

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

No problem. :3
